The importance of and considerations for team and company culture and what is wrong with the current high school education process.

Don’t F up the culture: (4 min read) – link

A thought provoker from a while ago – Peter Thiel’s advice to Airbnb in 2012. It grabbed my attention recently as I’m working with a team made up of people from multiple organisations that is set up to operate like a start up. So we are evolving our own culture – while team members also identify with and belong to another company that has its own culture. I can see every day how the strengths and weaknesses of our team culture help and hinder us. In this environment team culture needs to be particularly strong to form the bonds we need while also being respectful and aware of the cultures of the respective parent companies.

The Absurd Structure of High School: (6 min read) – link

Bernie’s application of a typical high school day to a workplace makes it painfully obvious how outdated the current system is. I’ve discussed this very point with various teachers and one of the key underlying issues is that for the process to change the assessment structure also needs to change. In Australia some schools are making big, exciting changes in how and what they teach in years 7-10 (and earlier) that are far better for students and teachers alike. However once students enter their final 2 years at high school they are forced back into this inefficient model to fit in with the state controlled end of high school exam process. As a result the increase in creativity, confidence and joy of learning being realised by these new approaches is quickly eroded – leaving them, in my view, far less prepared for university and for achieving their full potential in the future.
