Stack Overflow’s 2019 Developer Survey results: (between 2min – 10hr read) – link

All sorts of great insights here. Diversity amongst developers continues to be an issue and it was particularly disheartening to note that this survey joins others in identifying that women leave developer jobs faster than men. There is a lot of focus on how to get young women into the technology industry – it seems we need to spend more time on how to keep them. On a positive observation, a high percentage of developers are satisfied with their work and with their managers – I wonder how this compares with other professions? Language and the technologies used are the most important factors in choosing a job (outside benefits), followed by office environment and culture. Meetings are rated as a big challenge to productivity.

How can we bring transparency to urban tech? These icons are a first step: (8 min read) – link

Sidewalk Labs has collaborated with a wide group of contributors to develop their first release of a visual system designed to transparently communicate the digital surveillance deployed in public places. It’s a clever system – simple to understand at a glance and equally as easy to drill a little bit more to understand in depth what is captured, how it is used, by who and even how it is stored. As the misuse of data continues to grab headlines fuelling public concern on privacy such systems will enable forward thinking cities to enhance their safety and liveability beyond the physical.

SpaceX lands all three Falcon Heavy rocket boosters for the first time ever: (2 min read) – link

This is just amazing to watch. It’s really interesting to compare the “failure” rates over the years and recognise how SpaceX clearly saw all these events as just part of learning what they needed to to make rocket reuse a reality. They presented no negative connotations to an unsuccessful landing – they even openly shared videos online. I love how the article just casually mentions SpaceX’s drone ships – ‘cause drone ships are just so ho-hum… 😉
